History

The hotel is situated in a local courtyard (bahal) giving an aura of living with the community, but within the comforts of a hotel. Its location is of great significance to Patan as the whole area used to belong to a highly revered tantric priest of the 14th century, Gayah bajya whose family served as the royal priests. In the hotel entrance lies a powerful shrine of the monkey god Hanuman. Legend says, this Hanuman shrine has protected the area from thieves for centuries. Out from the hotel courtyard is the Shiva temple and behind lies the main house of Gayah bajya. The house is a spiritually blessed area having centuries old religious significance.

The lake area next to the hotel is called Pim Bahal. This man-made lake built 2000 years back is believed to have been the main water source for the whole of Patan. Legend has it that the pond was built by hooligans who had no work but to terrorise the residents, hence the famous Gayah Bajya summoned them and put them to work by digging the pond for a water source.

About Patan

Patan is one of the three heritage cities of Kathmandu Valley. Patan, also known as ‘Lalitpur’, means the city of artisans and is home to the valley’s finest craftsmen who have preserved ancient techniques such as the repoussé and lost wax process used to produce exquisite sculptures. It is a marvel of the Malla dynasty architecture and the city retains much of the old charm with its narrow streets, brick houses and multitude of well-preserved Hindu temples, Buddhist monasteries and monuments. The Patan Durbar square area is a UNESCO world heritage site housing the marvelous palace of the Malla kings and exquisite temples.

We arrange guided tours for guests to learn more about the history and culture or you can just simply get lost in the charming lanes of the city and admire the traditional lifestyle and architecture.
